 ☽Case study☽

☆⭒━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━☆⭒

This week we are tasked to make a case study of a film of our interest from inception to exhibition and I choose the film Dark Shadows.

The film Dark Shadows was released on May 11, 2012, in the USA. This comedy fantasy is directed by Tim Burton a director which I have watched many films by! He is known for many gothic films like Beetlejuice (My personal favorite), Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. With the help of executive producers Johnny Depp (who stars as Barnabas collins) Christi Dembrowski, David Kennedy, Graham King, and Richard D. Zanuck this film comes to life and reinterprets the original Dan Curtis 1960's TV show Dark Shadows with a modern twist and a relatable set of characters. The writing for screenplay and story by Seth Grahame-Smith and John August with a budget of $150 million this film grossed a total of $245.5 million from the domestic and international box office.

This film was shot on digital with the use of the ARRICAM Lite (LT) camera, the ARRICAM Studio (ST) camera, Angenieux Optimo Zoom Lenses, and the Cooke S4 Lenses. I couldn't find a specific reason why these cameras and lenses were used but I believe that they were used for the close-up shots done throughout the movie.

The film was produced by Village Roadshow Pictures which is a major production company with famous films produced like The Matrix series, Mad Max: Fury Road, and most recently the 2019 hit Joker. It was distributed via a wide release by another major company Warner Bros. Pictures. The marketing strategy for the film was definitely aimed at young adults even if the film is rated pg-13. Warner Bros released clips and interviews with the cast before the release of the movie which created a good hype on release day. While the film did heavy marketing before the release of the movie no cross-promotion was done and neither was any official merch. The only merchandise sold was the DVDs after the release of the movie in theaters. Now you can watch this film on most streaming services like Hulu, Apple TV+, and Amazon Prime Videos.
